River Plate defeated San Lorenzo 1-0 (0-0) in the first leg game of the Recopa Sudamericana Tournament, between the Argentinean teams, played on Friday night at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.
Uruguayan Carlos Sanchez (77 minutes) scored the only goal with a powerful header, which allowed River Plate to win the first match between the winners of the Copa Libertadores 2014 (San Lorenzo) and the Copa Sudamericana 2014 (River Plate).
The return and final game of the series will be held on February 11th at San Lorenzo's Nuevo Gasometro stadium. San Lorenzo needs a two goal difference to claim the series, or a one goal win to even the tournament, at which point they will go to a shootout if it is necessary to produce a winner. River meanwhile, can claim the trophy by simply finishing with a draw.
