In its meeting yesterday, September 15, 2014, the Disciplinary Tribunal of CONMEBOL adopted various decisions.

In its meeting yesterday, September 15, 2014, the Disciplinary Tribunal of CONMEBOL adopted various decisions.

Club Nacional of Football

Imposing a match behind closed doors and fined $110,000 for the clashes between local spectators and security forces that occurred in the Centenario Stadium in a 2014 Copa Bridgestone Libertadores match played last March 26 against Newell’s Old Boys.

Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro

Imposing a match behind closed doors and fined $100,000 for firing flares onto the field requiring the stoppage of the second match of the final of the 2014 Copa Bridgestone Libertadores played against Club Nacional (Paraguay) on August 13, 2014.

Club Alianza de Lima

Imposing three games behind closed doors and fined $150,000 for the incidents in the match of the 2014 Copa Total Sudamericana played on August 27 against Barcelona Sporting Club of Ecuador. In the said match the local fans used flares, some of which were thrown onto the pitch seriously endangering the physical safety of players and match officials, plus causing the match to be stopped on several occasions eventually forcing its early termination by the referee. Also the home fans clashes with police during the match. Finally, a section of the public made discriminatory sounds against certain players from Barcelona Sporting Club.

The matches behind closed doors will be observed in the next official competition organized by CONMEBOL in which will participate the sanctioned clubs. These decisions of the Court of Discipline are subject to appeal before the Court of Appeals.

The fight against racism, discrimination and xenophobia is a top priority for CONMEBOL. The Confederation has a policy of zero tolerance for such behavior on both the field and in the stands.

CONMEBOL would argue that banning the use of flares or other pyrotechnic objects in football stadiums are aimed primarily at safeguarding both fans coming to watch the games as well as players and officials present on the field of play. These objects pose a clear danger to such persons, which increases when they are deliberately thrown onto the pitch. South American football has had to mourn in recent times those injured as well as even the death of a spectator because of the use of such devices in continental competition matches.

Finally, CONMEBOL condemns any form of violence in its competitions, such as the confrontation between fans against security forces.

The conduct described in the preceding paragraphs constitutes serious violations of the Disciplinary Rules of CONMEBOL and will be punished severely.
