Carlos Ischia, former coach of Deportivo Quito in Ecuador, was appointed to lead the ailing Racing Club of Argentina, replacing Luis Zubeldía who left because of poor results only four matches into the season.
The appointment of Ischia, 56, was decided during a lengthy meeting with the athletic director of the 'Academia', Roberto Ayala, informed a source close to the situation.
Ischia, who was champion of the 2008 Apertura with Boca Juniors, will take over his position with Racing on Monday after the fifth round of the season.
The last team he led was Deportivo Quito, with whom he was champion of Ecuador in 2011, and left in May the following year.
The coach also led Argentinia teams Velez Sarsfield, Gimnasia, Rosario Central and Boca Juniors as well as Colombia's Junior and Atlas of Guadalajara in Mexico.
Racing was eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana and is in last place in the standings in the local tournament, together with Belgrano, with just one point from four games.
