Ecuador will retire jersey number 11 in tribute to striker Christian 'Chucho' Benitez who died suddenly on Monday from cardiac arrest, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) announced on Thursday.
Benitez played for the national team using the number 11 jersey and after his untimely death FEF president, Luis Chiriboga, decided that henceforth no national team player will wear the number 11, according federation spokesman, Victor Mestanza.
"That shirt will never be used, that shirt is a tribute that will be provided to 'Chucho'," Mestanza told the press.
Benitez played 58 times with the Ecuadorian selection, scoring 24 goals and was one of the stars in helping the team qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
The attacker died Monday due to cardio-respiratory failure after debuting for his new club in Qatar, Al-Jaish catarí.
Benitez had transferred a few weeks ago from club América of Mexico. He had helped América win the Mexican league and where he was the top scorer last season.
