Peru coach Ricardo Gareca argued that his team did what it needed to take all three points in the 1-0 win against Haiti.
"We knew it would be a tough match but Peru deservedly won the game," said Gareca in the press conference after the match that was played in CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
"I congratulate the group. It is not easy to face the pressure of a debut. Despite the result we can improve," added the coach, critical of his players after they got the go-ahead goal.
"At times we defended to close to our goal, which is not recommended. There are things to correct," he said.
Peru will face Ecuador on Wednesday in Phoenix.
