A unanimous decision: A draw will determine the classifications for the World Cup and CONMEBOL Tournaments

In a lengthy meeting on Friday, January 23rd at the Hotel Conrad Punta del Este, the Executive Committee of CONMEBOL, under Chairman Mr. Juan Ángel Napout, resolved several issues relating to continental football.

Unanimously, it was decided that in future qualifiers for the classification of the World Championships by FIFA and also the tournaments organized by CONMEBOL, will all go through a draw.

It was agreed that this year after the Copa America Tournament, there will be 4 games after October for the qualification for Russia's 2018 World Cup.  In 2016, 6 games will be played, and finally in 2017, the remainder 8 games.

On July 25th in the city of St. Petersburg, FIFA's draw ceremony will take place.  Organizational issues of qualifying will be resolved in the month of April in the House of the South American Football.

"In unity is where we have our strength," he said.

The South America bloc will vote on all major issues, including those outside the continent.  This kind of attitude is traditional, praised President Napout, noting that the decisions regarding the playoffs reflects that institutional interest is above the individual, "and that makes us strong."

 

Political-Sports Issues

The representatives of South American football, devoted extensive discussions and decided to inform the disciplinary bodies the recent case of the suspension of the Ordinary Congress of the Ecuadorian Football Federation; the matter will be reviewed by the alleged transgression of Article 69.1 of the Statute of the CONMEBOL, and recurrence at the expense of the principles of organized football.

 

A case in Bolivia

Another point of discussion was the Bolivian government's attempts to influence the decisions of football's governing body  in contravention of FIFA's statutory provisions 13 and 17 Article 12.1 of the South American Football Confederation.

CONMEBOL is analyzing the situation, in Bolivia's attempted threat against the fundamental principle of non-interference in the affairs of football.

 

A warm welcome

In opening of the meeting of the South American football governing body, its President, Mr Juan Angel Napout, gave a warm welcome to the new head of the Peruvian Football Federation, Mr. Edwin Oviedo: "You are welcome to this house, in which your country is highly regarded because what it has done in the development of football in South America. Your contribution will be valuable and important to all of us, "said Mr. Napout.  He also congratulated Mr. Luis Chiriboga for his reelection in the Ecuadorian Football Federation.

 


 

Copa Centenario Tournament

On February 5th, in the city of Punta del Este, in an sample of responsibility, the main authorities of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF will meet to continue discussions on the organization of the Copa Centenario Tournament, which is to be organized by both institutions in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the South American Confederation.

CONCACAF committee will be headed by president Jeffrey Webb, Justino Compean (Mexico), Eduardo Li (Costa Rica) and Enrique Sanz (Secretary General); as well as the leaders of CONMEBOL, President Juan Angel Napout; Vice President Luis Bedoya, Vice President of FIFA South America, Eugenio Figueredo and the Secretary General, José Luis Meiszner.

 

FIFA Delegation

An important delegation of FIFA, is at the Conrad Hotel in Punta del Este.  On Saturday 24th, they will meet with the highest authorities of CONMEBOL, where important issues about their fruitful relationship and a grea array of world football issues will be studied.

The delegation is comprised of Messrs Cyril Loyse.; Juerg Nepffel, Flavia Lopes, Primo Corvaro and Gregory Engelbrecht.

 

Excited appreciation to Dr. Marin

The members of the Executive Committee gave a standing ovation in recognition of the outstanding work performed by Dr. José María Marín, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The President of the Federation of Chile, Sergio Jadue and Mr. Chiriboga FEF, both highlighted the service Dr. Martin has done for the unity of all South American football.

The Brazilian leader thanked the noble gesture, stating that he will "never forget the generous and caring attitude of the authorities of CONMEBOL, and that South American football is not about quantity but quality."

As an epilogue to the meeting of the Executive Committee, the President of the institution, Mr. Juan Angel Napout, accompanied by Vice Luis Bedoya and Sergio Jadue; the President of the APF, Alejandro Dominguez, and the President of the AUF, Wilmar Valdez, gave a press conference, where they explained the details of all matters discussed at the meeting.

President Napout, recognized and congratulated the head of the Uruguayan Football Association "for the excellent organization of the "Juventud de America Tournament championship"and the warmth shown to all the leaders and visitors who arrived to Uruguay to celebrate the tournament.

At the meeting the following figures were present: Pres. CONMEBOL, Mr. Juan Angel Napout, Mr Eugenio Figueredo, FIFA Vice President.; Marco Polo Del Nero, representative of the institution within the EC of FIFA; Luis Segura (AFA); Carlos Chávez (FBF and treasurer of the CSF); José María Marín (CBF); Luis Bedoya (FCF and Vice President of CONMEBOL); Sergio Jadue (FFCH and Vice-CSF); Luis Chiriboga Acosta (FEF); Alejandro Domínguez (APF); Edwin Oviedo (FPF); Wilmar Valdez (AUF) and Rafael Esquivel (FVF and Vice President of the Confederation).
