Australia and Qatar, invited to CONMEBOL Copa América 2020

The Council members approved the participation of Australia and Qatar, champions of the last two editions of the Asian Cup, as guests in CONMEBOL Copa América 2020 to be held in Colombia and Argentina.

By draw, one of the invited teams will play in the North Zone group with Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru, and the other invited team will face Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia in the South Zone group.

São Paulo, July 13, 2019. The CONMEBOL Council met on Thursday in São Paulo, meeting in which the participation of Australia and Qatar as invited countries in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2020, both champions of the last two editions of the Asian Cup, was approved. The competition, which for the first time in its history will take place in two locations in Argentina and Colombia, will be held in two groups of six teams grouped in the South Zone and the North Zone.

In this way, the two initial groups would be as follows:

  • North Zone: Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and one of the invited countries
  • South Zone: Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and one of the invited countries

Each group will qualify four teams for the final phase of the tournament, consisting of the quarterfinals, semifinals and the grand final.

In total, CONMEBOL Copa América 2020 will offer 38 matches, ensuring that each continent team plays at least 5 matches and approaching the tournament matches to the fans across the continent.
