Together for the «South American dream» of the 2030 World Cup

  • The President of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, emphasized that in South America, history that unites the world iniciated, and for that reason «100 years later we would love to share our passion for soccer with the whole world once again».
  • The President of the Republic of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, as host of the meeting held at the Palacio de Lopez, assured that the candidacy has the arguments and history necessary to accomplish this great challenge.
  • The delegations of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile were accompanied by Ignacio Alonso, Robert Harrison and Sebastián Moreno, Presidents of Member Associations of CONMEBOL.
  • Fernando Marín, General Coordinator of the Joint Candidature for the 2030 World Cup, was confident that this process will end with a «soccer goal of the Southern Cone «.

Luque, Paraguay – July 12, 2019. The National Secretariat of Sports of Paraguay, in collaboration with the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), CONMEBOL and the Joint Candidature for the 2030 World Cup, the delegations of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile gathered today at the Palacio de Lopez, to promote the bidding, accompanied by Ignacio Alonso, Robert Harrison and Sebastián Moreno, Presidents of the Association Members of the Confederation.

The President of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, encouraged the delegations to work in coordination to «build a solid bidding with to compete and achieve the South American dream». In addition, Dominguez emphasized that «in South America history that today unites the world iniciated refering to the first Football World Cup in history in 1930 in Uruguay, and 100 years later we would like to share our passion for soccer once again.»

The top representative of South American soccer also highlighted the commitment of the institution to the promotion of the bidding since the beginning of his mandate, in the World Cup in Russia at the Casa de Futbol Sudamericano in Moscow, and recently in the CONMEBOL Copa América Brasil 2019 by showing the the video of the bidding, which reached 180 countries around the world, in all stadiums of the tournament.

The meeting was also attended by the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, who, in addition to hosting the various delegations, assured that the bidding for the 2030 World Cup has the necessary «arguments and history» to accomplish this great challenge. Abdo Benítez was confident in the good direction of the bidding and said paraphrasing Churchill that «only optimists see each challenge as an opportunity» thus encouraging to join efforts to show the world again «our way of understanding soccer.»

For his part, Fernando Marín, General Coordinator of the Joint Candidature for the 2030 World Cup, said he has no doubt that this project «will end with a soccer «goal» of the Southern Cone», and highlighted the strength of South American soccer, stating that «everytime there is a soccer

ball rolling, there is always an Argentine, a Uruguayan, a Chilean or a Paraguayan running right behind it.»

A new impetus is given to the joint bid to host the great world soccer celebration by different delegations and Member Associations of the four countries after holding this working meeting.

Institutional Governance Agreement

During the meeting, an institutional governance structure was approved. This model establishes a single entity that will represent the joint bid of the four countries, allowing the creation of a functional structure made up of an Executive Committee and an Executive Secretariat.

The agreement was made taking into account the mandate of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Heads of State of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile during the Mercosur Summit, held last Wednesday July 17 in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina.
