Messi: “Being a father has helped me grow and think that in life there are other things besides football”

In a rare occurrence for Messi, the Argentine star talks about more personal issues such as paternity. "It has changed everything. He comes first then everything else. It has also changed the way I see a match."

Lionel Messi admitted to having many problems in 2014 and has tried to forget that season and regain his "best version", in an interview published in the 'Barca' magazine.

"Last year I had an uneven season. I was out a long time because of injuries and I missed many games," said Messi at the start of the interview.

The 2013-2014 season was the first in many years that Barcelona did not win any title. "We were winning everything. Every year we were getting a title, and perhaps the fans and ourselves did not value what we were winning," admitted the 'Flea'.

"It was a bad year where we won nothing. And now when we win we give it the importance it deserves and we enjoy it more because we know they are very complicated to achieve," he added.

– 398 goals for Barça –

"It's nice to score goals, but at this point every goal is a goal more," he added.

In the interview Messi also referred to his mistakes from the penalty spot: "It is true they say a well taken penalty is very difficult to stop, but it is more complicated for me now when taking a penalty. It is just football. But I am angry when I miss like against Manchester City (first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League), the goal would have given us a major advantage."

"Being a father has helped me grow"

In a rare occurrence for Messi, the Argentine star talks about more personal issues such as paternity.

"It has changed everything. He comes first then everything else. It has also changed the way I see a match. Before if I lost or did something wrong I didn't talk to anyone for three or four days, until it passed. Now, I come home after a game, I see my son and everything is alright," he said in reference to his son Thiago.

"Being a parent has helped me grow and think that in life there are other things besides football," he concluded.
