Ex-Argentine footballer Juan Taverna, an idol at Banfield, passes away

Ex-Argentine footballer Juan Taverna, an idol at Banfield and America champion with Estudiantes, passed away Friday at the age of 66, said his family.

Taverna held the record of having scored seven goals in a league game in 1974 when Banfield defeated Puerto Comercial 13-1 in the biggest margin of victory in Argentine football.

“We are saddened for our loss, the man who has the record of goals scored in a game in Argentina. Thanks ‘Juanchi'”, said club Banfield via Twitter.

Taverna, a ‘9’ with an exquisite touch and explosive shots, emerged in Estudiantes where he played between 1968 and 1971, during which he won three Copa Libertadores under coach Osvaldo Zubeldía.

From there he went to Banfield where he played from 1972-1976 during which he reached the peak of his career with a total of 56 goals. In total he scored 90 goals in 186 games.

He also played for Boca Juniors where he was league champion in 1976 and then retired in 1981 from club Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.

Last October Banfield paid tribute to him on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his goal record from 1974.
