9-satw-15

Former Brazilian national team goalkeeper and world champion in 1958 and 1962, Gylmar dos Santos, known simply as Gilmar (with an I), died on Sunday in Sao Paulo. The president of the CBF determined that the Seleção will honor him in the match against Australia on September 7 in Brasilia.

Dos Santos (83) died in the afternoon at the Sirio Libanés Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since Aug. 8.

13 years ago the former goalkeeper had suffered a stroke. He also had a heart condition.

Born in the port of Santos on the coast of the state of Sao Paulo, Dos Santos was part of the two-time World Cup winning team along with Pele.

He was elected the best Brazilian goalkeeper of the twentieth century and one of the best in the world by the IFFHS.

He is remembered for his restrained style and peaceful personality.

For 10 years he played for Brazilian club Corinthians, from 1951 to 1961, and retired from football in 1969.

The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation mourned the death of the goalkeeper who Brazilians learned to admire for his elegant style.

Brazilian football is in mourning. After De Sordi, now Gilmar, players who made Brazilian fans feel proud. My condolences on behalf of the directors and officers of the CBF to the family. He was one of the best Brazilian goalkeepers of all time.

The president of the CBF determined that the Seleção will honor him in the match against Australia on September 7 in Brasilia.
